A Classic Phuket Golf Experience
Loch Palm Golf Club, nestled amidst a mountainous jungle basin, has been a beloved fixture on the Phuket golf scene since 1993. While not as challenging as some of its illustrious neighbors, it offers a delightful and strategic course suitable for all skill levels.
The key to a good score here? Keeping your ball dry. The course’s namesake loch and its tributaries snake throughout the layout, frequently cutting into fairways and threatening even the straightest drives. Straying off course might lead you into the numerous palm trees, but their positioning allows for reasonable recovery shots. A standout hole on the front nine is the par-3 4th, a long shot over water to a semi-island green, demanding precision club selection.
The back nine truly shines with memorable holes. The 14th, a short par-3 with an elevated tee box to an island green, presents a tricky club selection with balls seemingly hanging in the air forever before hopefully finding the green. Another thrilling par-3 awaits on the 16th – anything right disappears into the water, and a sloping two-tier green adds another layer of difficulty.
While the course conditions are generally excellent considering the high traffic, a slight inconsistency exists in green speeds. Some recently relaid greens play much faster, so be sure to listen to the caddies’ advice! Weekends can get crowded, so consider booking your round midweek for a more relaxed experience.
The recently renovated clubhouse offers excellent facilities, including changing rooms, a pro-shop, and a delightful restaurant. A unique driving range where you hit floating balls over a lake adds an extra touch of fun. While there’s a small resort on-site, for a more comprehensive Phuket experience, consider staying near the beach areas, which offer a wider range of activities.
