Sea Pines Golf Club
Sea Pines: A Coastal Challenge in Hua Hin
Nestled along the Gulf of Thailand in Hua Hin, Sea Pines Golf Club (Army Golf Club II) offers a unique links-style golfing experience. Originally owned by the Royal Forestry Department, this course boasts a rich history, transitioning to its current military ownership under Prime Minister Sarit Thanarat in the 1950s.
The course itself is a haven of scenic beauty. Bracken pine trees line the fairways, creating a picturesque contrast with the majestic mountains and sparkling ocean backdrop. Originally developed as a retreat for Thai soldiers and veterans, Sea Pines now offers a challenge for golfers of all skill levels.
The layout provides a diverse test, with difficulty fluctuating based on wind conditions. Six holes play alongside the beach, while the remainder wind towards the mountains, separated by a railroad track. The par-5 12th stands out as a strategic challenge, featuring fairway bunkers and a water hazard that force golfers to consider a driver or a more conservative approach.
The back nine truly elevates the experience. As the sea breeze picks up, the final three holes become some of the most memorable in Hua Hin. The dogleg par-5 16th demands a precise drive to avoid water hazards on both sides, followed by a crucial approach shot where players must decide between a risky shortcut or a safer lay-up.
The signature 17th par-3 offers a breathtaking ocean view, but requires an all-carry shot over water to a well-protected peninsula green. This picturesque hole can become particularly difficult depending on wind and pin placement.
The challenging par-4 18th concludes the round. A canal presents a significant hazard, demanding a long drive or a strategic lay-up to reach the fairway.
While the modern clubhouse offers delicious Thai cuisine and the course provides good value, it’s important to note that military personnel have priority for tee times. If you’re on a tight schedule, checking for course availability beforehand is highly recommended.
